It is not often that you acquire a client that has a large budget and ultimate trust in your abilities and creative concepts. But when you do, it is important to take full advantage and design the kitchen of their dreams!
My client wanted all of the conveniences of a modern kitchen with a long list of built-in appliances, pull-out accessories, integrated lighting features and show stopping, “one of a kind” design details. The most interesting and unique request, I have ever had to date, was the concealed passage to the Butler’s Kitchen and Spice Pantry, which is accessed by a back hallway that leads directly from the garage entrance into the kitchen.
I easily incorporated all of their desired appliances onto one wall for ease of use and functionality. I broke up the monotony of what would have been a wall of cabinetry doors with some 3D applied panels for the fridge, an open shelf for display above the fridge/freezer, and framed the oven cabinets with an accent colour to match the base cabinets.
Creating a concealed passage was no easy task and I had to do quite a bit of research with my cabinetry supplier to find a pocket door hinge kit that would hold the weight of such large doors and also slide into a slim pocket, deep enough so the door would completely disappear when open. The client absolutely loves this feature!
For lighting, I obviously had some fun with the decorative lighting fixtures over the island, but the real show stopper is the back lit onyx in the Dinette Bar Area. I had to create a cavity large enough for the LED strip lighting, that would give the stone a nice over all glow, and then frame it in to conceal the gap for a nice clean look. The island also sports some dado LED lighting in the toe kick all the way around the perimeter, as shown in the plan.
Lastly, I wanted to highlight all of the design details in the clever colour changes throughout the kitchen, the stainless-steel trim on the simple hood canopy, and the 3D door panels that I had custom made special for this kitchen.
I am immensely proud of this kitchen and so happy to share it with the world!
