The Importance of Spring Cleaning

Before we dig into the step-by-step guide, let’s first take a closer look at the importance of spring cleaning.

The benefits of spring cleaning your home can include:

  • A clean and safe space for your family, pets and guests

  • More pride and confidence in your home

  • Motivation to entertain family and friends

  • Enjoy a peaceful space to relax

Once your home is both refreshed and organized, you may consider your next home design project. Especially now that you have a clean, blank canvas to work with!

Your Step-By-Step Guide to Spring Cleaning

It’s time to give your home the refresh it deserves! We can think of no better opportunity to declutter, clean and organize your home, than spring cleaning.

1. Make a Plan

Before you can begin spring cleaning your home, it’s important to first make a plan. This can help you to complete your spring cleaning goal effectively and on schedule. Account for the most important areas of your home, set aside time to clean and even organize for a loved one to help if needed!

2. Declutter

Removing clutter is essential to your spring cleaning. It can help to remove unnecessary items that are taking up space within your home, effectively creating a more relaxing and appealing space.

Here are a few key rules of thumb to follow when decluttering your home:

  • Does it have a space? If not, either find a space or discard the item.

  • Can it be stored? Don’t display it! This can lead to future clutter and disorganization.

  • Have you used it within the last six months? If not, discard the item.

Once the clutter has been removed, you can continue with proper cleaning and organization.

3. Keep, Donate, Sell, or Toss

Once you have removed the clutter, the question remains… What should you do with it?

The answer is simple: create four areas to sort your items into, including:

  • Keep

  • Donate

  • Sell

  • Toss

By sorting the items into categories, you can help to ensure that each item has an actionable next step and that it won’t collect dust in a closet.

4. Clean From Top to Bottom

When cleaning each room and area within your home, it can be helpful to follow a “top to bottom” rule. This will help to ensure that any dust, dirt or debris will fall to the next level to be cleaned, reducing the amount of time that you need to back-track and re-clean each area.

For instance, begin with the top of your cabinets and then move to the cabinet doors, countertops, sink, and then lastly, the floor.

5. Wash Windows

It’s time to wash the windows throughout your home. With the right technique, you can remove dust and dirt with a seamless, streak-free result! When cleaning your windows, be sure to also account for the window tracks and any glass doors.

6. Deep Clean Floors and Carpets

As one of the most high-traffic surfaces within your home, your floors and carpets deserve a deep cleaning. Depending on the type of flooring, your approach to a deep cleaning may differ.

For example, carpets should be cleaned using a carpet shampoo machine and a vacuum, while wood floors should be tended to with a broom, specialty cleaner and mop.

Tip: If you have pets, don’t forget your trusty friend, the enzyme cleaner! An enzyme cleaner will help to get rid of unwanted odours of past “oops”!

7. Overlooked Surfaces

When spring cleaning it’s important to consider surfaces that may be otherwise overlooked. This can include areas such as behind the garbage can, on top of the kitchen cabinets, and light fixtures.

Not only can this help to ensure that these areas are being cleaned at least once a year, but it can also provide you with the motivation to clean them more regularly.

Tip: Collect all of your heat register covers and put them in the dishwasher! They come out perfectly new and completely sterilized without having to do much at all.

8. Move Furniture

It’s no secret that it can get a little dirty underneath your furniture.

And understandably so! Chances are that you’re spending more time using the furniture than cleaning underneath it, and that is okay. What matters is that you’re taking the time to give it a deep cleaning and refresh now!

First, use a vacuum to remove any crumbs, dust or dirt that may be on the furniture or in the couch cushions. You may also want to consider using a lightly dampened cloth to give the surface areas a wipe down.

Once the furniture itself has been cleaned, move it from the current position so that you can clean underneath it. This may require tools such as a broom, vacuum and/or mop. Once the area is clean and dry, reposition the furniture and enjoy it once again!

Tip: When cleaning furniture refrain from using any harsh chemicals or strong acidic cleaners like vinegar, as they can ruin the surface over time. Instead, use diluted dish detergent in water! Just a few drops in a bucket of warm water can go a long way and it won’t ruin anything.

9. Elevate Your Organization

Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to elevate your approach to organization.

Whether it be using bins to store winter essentials during the warmer months, an organizer to keep your shoes tidy or a new cabinet for your important paperwork - organization is key to cleanliness!  Tip: Use a cutlery divider to organize your junk drawer!  Those compartments are great for pens, spare batteries and notepads!

10. Address Any Damage

As you perform the deep cleaning of your interior spaces, you will be provided with the opportunity to discover and assess any damage. Once a problem area has been identified, you can make note of it and establish a plan of action to rectify it.

Whether it be a fresh coat of paint or a new handle on a cabinet door, these finishing touches can really help to bring your space together.
