The Top 8 Interior Trends We Expect in 2023

New year, new design trends!

Welcome to 2023. Where the old is in, and the new is on its way out. That’s right, vintage-style interiors and bold designs are currently trending, with the Instagram-worthy modern trends we have seen in recent years are slowly on their way out. Not only that, but sustainability has never been so popular!

Whether you’ve purchased a new home that’s in need of a transformation or your current space is feeling a little dated, here are some of the top design trends that we’re seeing in 2023.

Sustainability

Sustainability is more popular than ever before.

And for great reason!

With fast fashion on the rise, we’re experiencing products that, while beautiful and trendy, aren’t always made with lasting quality in mind. We first noticed it in the clothing industry, but now the furniture and home decor industry has also been greatly affected.

This is where making the old new again can really come in handy. Flipping older pieces of furniture that have truly stood the test of time is not only great for your home and wallet, but can be beneficial for the environment, too!

To take things a step further, purchasing second-hand furniture from a local shop can also help to support the businesses within your community. Everybody wins!

Sourcing items that are zero-waste, upcycled or artesian produced can result in a really unique and interesting interior. Not only that, but each piece of furniture also comes with a story and history behind it.

Bold Kitchens

It’s hard to deny that we have experienced a wave of neutral kitchens in recent years. Without a palette of complementary textures, finishes and colours, it doesn’t take much for your kitchen to become bland and uninteresting.

While neutral colours have their place in every aspect of your home, we truly believe that bold and interesting kitchens will be all the rage in 2023!

Firstly, we are expecting to see kitchens that feature more than one colour. This can help to not only add personality to your space, but also attract interest and overall appeal. Especially when they effectively complement one another!

Once the colour palette has been solidified and applied, adding the right hardware will really bring it all together! To really elevate your kitchen, without adding too much noise or overwhelming your guests, brushed gold and matte black hardware can add the perfect finishing touches.

Upscale Laundry Rooms

After spending what feels like a decade inside of our homes, it’s no wonder why many of us are looking to make the most of our living spaces.

With the right approach, your laundry room can maintain the perfect balance between style and function. After all, your laundry room is a space where function is absolutely necessary. Without the right approach to layout and design, you may be left with a space that doesn’t cater to your needs or wants.

This year, we’re expecting to see many homeowners revamping their laundry rooms with:

  • Functional and open-concept designs

  • Minimal, tasteful decor with organic influence

  • Versatile spaces to place and fold laundry

  • Shelving, wash basins and drying racks

  • Additional and hidden storage

  • Functional spaces to store cleaning essentials

How will you revamp your laundry room this year?

Splash of Colour

We’re excited to bring on the colour in 2023!

Whether a complete home renovation project or simple refresh, the right colour palette can do wonders for the interior of your home. While we agree that neutral colours are timeless and continue to have their place in many spaces, a completely neutral colour palette isn’t exactly what we’re expecting to see in the coming years.

Consumers are starting to move away from muted tones, instead incorporating colours that are rich, exciting and add a ton of personality to the space.

How colour is incorporated into a space is completely dependent on a number of factors, including, but not limited to, the personal preferences of the homeowner, product availability and, of course, the space as a whole.

Here are some of the best ways that you can incorporate colour into your home this year:

  • Add an accent wall, complete with colour, texture and depth. Not only can this add personality, but it can also help to attract focus to a certain area of your home.

  • If an accent wall is a little beyond your reach or comfort, or it doesn’t quite complement the space, why not consider hanging wall art? The right piece, or pieces, of wall art can really help to bring the room together. Not only by adding colour, but also personality!

  • Add a complementary piece of furniture to your living space or take the plunge by replacing an existing item - or items!

  • Spice up your curb appeal by painting the front door! We suggest selecting a colour that is friendly to all Canadian seasons, to help ensure that you get the most from it. To help you get started, we suggest looking at blue, green and red tones at your local paint or home improvement store.

  • As simple as it sounds, a cozy accent blanket or throw pillow can really improve the aesthetic and atmosphere with the inclusion of colour. Not only that, but they are exceptionally easy to update as trends pass or your tastes change.

  • Is your office, bedroom or bathroom feeling a little, stale? No matter the space within your home, a fresh coat of paint or wallpaper can really bring it back to life!

With the right approach to incorporating colour, the opportunities to elevate your home are truly endless.

Designed to Entertain

If our time spent at home taught us anything, it is the importance of relationships with our loved ones. Homeowners around the world are finding new ways to create homes that are not only more inviting and welcoming, but also perfect for entertaining!

Whether it be a versatile dining space with enough seating for all or a backyard paradise that radiates relaxation, there are an abundance of ways that you can elevate the entertainment potential of your home.

Earthy and Organic

There is nothing quite like the calm feeling of being connected to nature. With the inclusion of earthy and organic elements, your home can feel more welcoming and calming in ways never before imagined.

While we have seen many neutral-inspired palettes in recent years, which we believe are slowly being phased out with the introduction of rich colours, we still expect to see the inclusion of organic textures, tones and fixtures.

This can range from beautiful browns and organic colour palettes, to wooden furniture, pottery, plants, paper and fabric lighting, organic design, and many opportunities for natural light, such as large windows and skylights.

Vintage Inspired

It’s hard to deny that vintage interiors have most definitely been romanticized in recent years. This has drawn our team to the conclusion that we are going to continue to see a significant boost in everything vintage inspired when it comes to home design and decor.

From delicate wallpaper, pastel colour palettes and white accents, to rattan furniture, wide plank wood flooring and an overall coquette aesthetic, we welcome a vintage-inspired interior with open arms!

Dark Academia

Moody lighting. Dark wood furniture. Rich tones.

There is so much to love about an interior influenced by the dark academia aesthetic. Especially when paired with a library-style collection of books and an elegant bar cart!

If you’re looking to include a dark and academic aesthetic within your home, but aren’t quite sure where to begin, we suggest taking a closer look at the potential of an office space or den. These rooms are often perfectly paired with moody lighting and an upscale atmosphere.
